Hoagy Carmichael
Hoagie sandwich plus car plus microphone plus letter L
Before becoming a renowned musician, Carmichael was an IU graduate. In fact, it’s said that inspiration for his ubiquitous song “Stardust” struck while strolling IU’s campus. Carmichael’s tune “Chimes of Indiana” was gifted to IU in 1937 and has since become an official alma mater.
Lilly King

The IU swimmer won two gold medals at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Not one to rest on her laurels, King helped set an IU and Big Ten record in the 400 medley relay at the 2017 Big Ten Championships.
Will Shortz

“The New York Times” puzzler-in-chief crafts crosswords that bemuse millions, but his career began by creating his own major at IU. He’s still the only person in the world to hold a college degree in enigmatology.
Mark Cuban

The outspoken businessman, Dallas Mavericks owner, and star of ABC’s Shark Tank got his start and business smarts at IU. A noted philanthropist, Cuban gave back to IU through the creation of the Mark Cuban Center for Sports Media and Technology.

Trivia answers
1 - B: Book
The first rendering of the Indiana University seal appeared in the minutes of the July 21, 1841, Board of Trustees meeting. Though IU was founded in 1820, this drawing incorrectly listed 1830 as the date. Roman numerals are hard!
2 - D: All of the above
Yep. IU is awesome.
3 - B: ‘Kinsey’
Though some of the crew and star Liam Neeson did visit the IU campus in Bloomington, “Kinsey,” which chronicles the life and work of lU’s noted zoologist and sex researcher Alfred Kinsey, was filmed at Fordham University and other locations in the New York area. And, yes, parts of “Transformers” were filmed in Gary (home of IU Northwest), and “Rudy,” which covered another Indiana university, was filmed in South Bend (home of IU South Bend).
4 - C: A fire
In 1854, a midnight blaze destroyed the first College building, prompting IU alumni to band together to raise money to help rebuild. Now, the IU Alumni Association serves to unite and support more than 775,000 IU alums all over the world.
5 - D: All are part of the collection
These peculiar items only scratch the surface of all that the Lilly Library has to offer. Today, its collection includes more than 450,000 books and 8 million other treasures (even a few hairy ones).
6 - C: William Lowe Bryan
At 35 years, William Lowe Bryan's term is longest by nearly a decade. The tenures of Wells (26 years), Wylie (22 years), and Ryan (16 years) follow close behind. Taken together, these four presidents served for nearly half of IU’s history!
7 - B. Harry Styles
Sisk’s contributions to albums by Taylor Swift and St. Vincent have earned her multiple Grammy Awards. While she hasn’t worked with Styles (yet), her resume includes production credits for some of the biggest artists in music.
8 - A. Walt Disney
Walt Disney himself served as Grand Marshall of the 1966 Rose Parade. Accordingly, Walt Disney Productions created the game program's cover. A grass-chewing, barefoot brute was the studio's solution for the then mascot-less IU Hoosiers.
9 - A. Quinn Buckner
Buckner won an NCAA championship in 1976, an Olympic gold medal that summer, and an NBA championship with the Boston Celtics in 1984, making him a member of this truly exclusive club of athletes.
10 - D. “Circle of Life” (from “The Lion King”)
Howard Ashman’s lyrics won two Academy Awards, five Grammys, and sing-along status for millions of kids and kids-at-heart. Sadly, the 1974 grad passed away in 1991, but if you're like us, his work has become a permanent “part of your world.”
