The Origins of GLP-1 Innovation

Share on:
Ozempic and similar GLP-1 drugs—with their quick weight-loss effects—have become ubiquitous topics in health care and popular culture. While this new frontier of pharmaceuticals became wildly popular in just a few years, the science took decades to develop. Much of the research and innovation have ties to Indiana University, and a key player is IU Distinguished Professor Richard DiMarchi. In this episode, DiMarchi discusses the trend of GLP-1s and his contributions to the research that made them possible.

Host

J.D. Denny, BS’90, MA’01, is director of audience development and publishing for the IU Foundation and editor in chief of the IU Alumni Magazine.

Guests

Richard DiMarchi is a Distinguished Professor of Chemistry and Gill Chair in Biomolecular Sciences at Indiana University. DiMarchi is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Inventors Hall of Fame. His research was key to the discovery and development of the GLP-1 drugs that have transformed the treatment of obesity and diabetes.
