Make a Birthday Cake Box
A thoughtful and affordable way to give back to your local community!
Use this birthday cake box idea as a fun act of service using your stockpile of cake mixes and frosting or inexpensive nonperishables from the store.Be sure to check with your local food bank, but this makes for a thoughtful and welcomed donation.
Supplies to consider including in your cake box
- Box of cake mix
- Frosting
- Colorful sprinkles
- 1 can of Sprite (substitute for eggs and oil)*
- Birthday candles
- Paper plates
- Napkins
- Balloons
- Noisemakers
- Birthday banner
- Blank birthday card
Bake as directed except substitute in the can of Sprite for the eggs and oilfor convenience. The cake will be delicious. Enjoy!
Assembly supplies
- Disposable cake pan (with or without lid)
- Tape (see step 2)
- Plastic wrap (see step 3)
Instructions
- Add all your items to the disposable cake pan.
- If your disposable cake pan came with a clear lid, attach the lid and tape the edges to secure the contents.
- If your disposable cake pan did not come with a clear lid, wrap the pan using plastic wrap so all the items are visible.
- Add a little ribbon or bow to make it a bit festive.

“Herman B Wells Cake” Recipe
Make and enjoy an iconic IU cake for your special day
Ingredients
- 2 ⅔ cups sugar
- 1 ½ cups butter
- 4 ½ cups flower
- 2 tbsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 9 egg whites
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 1 tbsp vanilla extract
- 3-5 bananas
- Amount of fruit depends on the size of your cake and number of layers. Adjust amounts as needed.
- 1-2 pints strawberries

- 4-6 cups whipped cream
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar together for 2 minutes, until light and fluffy.
- Add egg whites to the butter-sugar mixture and mix until well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together buttermilk and vanilla extract.
- In another bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Alternately add the dry ingredients and the buttermilk mixture to the main bowl, mixing just until fully incorporated.
- Divide the batter evenly into two 9x13-inch baking pans (or preferred size), lined with parchment paper and lightly greased.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the cakes are baking, slice fresh bananas and strawberries for layering.
- Let cakes cool completely before layering.
- Place the first cake layer on a serving tray. Spread a layer of whipped cream. Add a layer of banana slices.
- Spread another thin layer of whipped cream, then add a layer of strawberries.
- Spread a third layer of whipped cream over the strawberries.
- Gently place the second cake layer on top. Repeat the whipped cream and fruit layers, or just add a final whipped cream layer.
- Cover the entire cake in whipped cream. Slice and serve!
