Governance

Leading our community forward

The IULatino Alumni Association (IULAA) is governed by a board of directors and advised by several committees. These leaders are more than their positions, though. They’re trailblazers, changemakers, and advocates—and you can join them in shaping the future of our group and the work we do.

FAQs

How are board members elected?

Officers are elected by ballot, which identifies the candidates that have been nominated by our general IULAA members. Notice of elections, re-elections, and vacancies are communicated to all general members via email.

To be added to our contact list, email our group’s IUAA staff liaison, Leah McRath-Hinton, at lmcrath@iu.edu.

At-large members serve two-year terms, with officers elected annually serving a maximum of two terms.

The Latino Alumni Association Board meets via conference call on the third Tuesday of each month at 4 p.m. EST.

You can be nominated by a fellow IULAA member or by self-nomination. Submit a nomination to the IULAA via email at latinoaa@iu.edu.

Join a committee, make an impact

As a general member of the Latino Alumni Association, you can get more involved by serving on a committee. Explore all the ways your talents can benefit our organization—as well as alumni, students, and other IU community members.

The charge of the Bylaws Committee is to consider amendments to the bylaws and review and draft rules for the conduct of the board, committees, and membership meetings. Committee members are required to participate in periodic conference calls and draft assigned rules.

The Communications Committee is responsible for encouraging alumni engagement, sharing the results of community partnerships, and leading the ongoing development, review, refinement, and enhancement of communication strategies and initiatives to highlight the impact of the IULAA.

The DLAA Committee oversees the process of awarding our highest honor, the Distinguished Latino Alumni Award. Committee members are required to participate in periodic conference calls, review the applications received, ensure the integrity of the selection process in accordance with the DLAA rules, and potentially coordinate and participate in an awards event.

The Partnership Committee’s mission is to seek opportunities to develop and cultivate mutually beneficial programs, activities, and outcomes between the public, businesses, nonprofits, government, educational institutions, and the IULAA.

The purpose of the Scholarship Committee is to raise funds for scholarships, conduct a timely review of applications, select the scholarship recipient(s), and establish the guidelines for the issuance of scholarships to students. Committee members are required to participate in periodic conference calls, review applications, and potentially coordinate and participate in an awards event.

The Strategy Committee recommends major strategic and policy initiatives that will impact the direction and activities of the IULAA. Once an initiative is approved in principle by the board, the committee has overall responsibility and approval authority for the initiative. The Strategy Committee is composed of members selected from within the board or outside the board, as appropriate, to enable the committee to best accomplish its charge.
