Make a gift even more meaningful

How memorial and tribute gifts works
- Select the assets you wish to donate; for example, cash, appreciated stock, real estate, or tangible personal property.
- Choose the fund that is most meaningful in relation to the person you are honoring, support an IU general fund, or create an endowment fund or scholarship in the person’s name.
- Decide whether you’d like us to make family members aware of your gift.

See it in action
IU Professor Chaman L. Jain recalls sitting and sharing memories with his children after the funeral of his wife, Santosh, in 2009. As they talked about Santosh’s wonderful qualities and generous spirit, Chaman’s son, Manu, said aloud what they had all been thinking: The family should do something special to honor her name and memory. His daughter, Madhulika (or “Mini”), suggested creating a graduate scholarship.
In the end, they all agreed that the scholarship should favor students who shared Santosh’s inclination toward volunteering and community service. “We wanted the scholarship to embody her spirit,” explained Chaman, noting that Santosh had volunteered with the India Society of Bloomington, hosting fundraising dinners and helping share the richness of the Indian culture with the community. She also opened their home to international students who were far from their families.
By establishing a scholarship at IU in Santosh’s name, Chaman ensured that her spirit will live on. He said, “She was very big on education and was always encouraging young people to continue to improve themselves.” Now, Santosh’s kindness and generosity will continue to welcome and encourage students for generations to come.
